CALIBER-2025 "Library 2047: Democratizing Knowledge towards Viksit Bharat" at Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh

November 17, 2025 at 6pm to November 19, 2025 at 7pm
Friday

Hi all,

I am B.E. graduate and have number of years of experience in IT field. Due to personal issues, I am unable to continue in my career. For my love towards books/reading, I am looking at pursuing BLIS and MLIS from IGNOU and hopefully build a career as a librarian in a time frame of 3-4 years.
I am not confident on this prospectus, as I am not aware of current value of this degree and market situation.
Could you please guide me if I could go ahead with BLIS degree as a start?

Many thanks in advance!!!

Thanks,
Namitha

Thank You LIS Proff.

Please don't choose librarian as a profession.........

खुद के मरे ही स्वर्ग और नर्क का पता चलता है। मरके देखो, फिर पता चलेगा कि इधर स्वर्ग है या नर्क है।

well said sir.

thank you.

Hello Namitha..

Every person have their own view point but I agree with Muneesh sir to think before changing your core domain. In my view and your love for books/reading and IT background.you can become a very good librarian. Its a great and challenging proffession. There is lot of to do (If we want) Best of Luck....

Thanks Saloni for your thoughts!

There is no profession were you may achieve success without hard work and LIS is not an exception.

No doubt, initially you will have to put extra efforts and have to go through struggle but once you achieve a good permanent job, then your entire life is at ease. That is the most attractive part of this profession.

If you are ready to work hard and go through initial struggle (3-4 years) then you are most welcome.

Good luck.

Mr. Manish

That's the spirit of a professional and entrepreneur.

Thank you.

Thank you for your encouraging words Manish!

Dear Namitha,

If you are BE in CSE or IT, then it would be an amazing opportunity for you. If you are BE in some other stream then I don't think there is much for you.

As far as your love for books is considered, Librarians have to work in the library with documents. They do not read them. At many places it is not even permitted. But anyways you will be around books all the time. It is a peaceful place to work. We need Engineers in libraries.

Yes sir.. I am a CSE graduate.

Being around books only gives me a serene feeling :)

Also looking forward to some challenging work in this field.

Thanks for your thoughts!

I rarely come online on this portal. Anyhow, seeing so many posts, I think you may havemade up your mind by now. Also, I see a lot many discouraging posts. Do not be afraid. Get a masters degree in LIS and clear UGC-NET. If you have a combination of both technical knowledge and good communication skills you will surely get a good job.

If you want to go for research you have so many fields to chose like linked data, research in metadata, knowledge management, etc, since you have a background in CSE.

All the very best.
