Is Creating Digital Libary online by collecting soft copies of books from faculty and other sources violation of copyright act?

Dear friends,

I am seriously thinking about creating a digital library by collecting soft copies from faculty and other sources (downloading etc.). I also want to put it on our library website. Will it be an act of copyright violation?

There is a lot of copyright issues in creating a digital library. In a simple sentence it is very difficult to tell you exactly but most of the journals and other publishing body have the option of Author's self archiving. So, it will be best if you able to collect the copies of document from the authors only, also during collection please take sign of the authors in a copyright aggrement page.
You can also read this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Access for more information.
