Michael  Gorman  is a British-born librarian, library scholar and editor/writer on library issues noted for his traditional views.

His key influence is Ranganathan, whom he regarded as “the greatest figure of librarianship in the twentieth century”

Gorman has expanded and added a more contemporary focus to Ranganathan’s Five Laws of Library Science in his book Future Libraries: Dreams, Madness and  Reality ( Book is available at American Library Chennai)

Five New Laws of Librarianship

Libraries serve humanity

Respect all forms by which knowledge is communicated

Use technology intelligently to enhance service

Protect free access to knowledge

Honor the past and create the future

1.      Title: Our Singular Strengths: Meditations for Librarians

A collection of 144 "meditations" for librarians, each meditation consists of a quotation, You can read the book straight through or just open it up anywhere and receive ideas and inspirations.

Perhaps librarians should have two copies of this book, one to keep at their desks for the times when they need help just to get through the day and one to keep by their bedsides to dip into time and again to validate their lives and careers and make them all right with the world. Edward Swanson

2.    Title: Our Own Selves: More Meditations For Librarians

Michael Gorman creates 100 new meditations specifically addressing the issues at the heart of the library profession. Reaffirming the value of librarianship and reintroducing the joys that make it unlike any other vocation, Gorman expands and follows up on his popular first collection of meditations, Our Singular Strengths (ALA Editions, 1997).
