Department of Library and Information Science, Gauhati University.

The Department of Library and Information Science, Gauhati University was established in 1966 as evening course with one year Bachelor of Library Science (B.Lib.Sc) degree. Later in 1979, one year Master of Library Science (M.Lib.Sc.) course was introduced. In 1983 the Department got independent status by separation from Gauhati University Library and changed its nomenclatures of both BLibSc and MLibSc to BLISc and MLISc respectively with complete revision of the course curricula. In 1985 the department is renamed, as Department of Library and Information Science and the course are accordingly renamed as BLISc and MLISc respectively. In 1992 the Department celebrated Silver Jubille programme to mark 25 years of its glorious establishment. Dr Jogeswar Sarma, the then Librarian of the Gauhati University Library was the Head of the Department since its inception. Later, Prof (Dr) Alaka Buragohain, Sri Bhadra Borah, Prof (Dr) Narendra Nath Sharma, Dr. Narendra Lahkar took over as the Head in different times. At present, Prof (Dr) Rajani Kanta Barman is the Head of the Department.

Comment by Badan Barman on November 6, 2009 at 12:08pm: Prof. Rajani Kanta Barman took the charge of the DLISc, Gauhati University, Guwahati, Assam as Head from 24/10/2009 onwards. Before joining to his present assignment he was working as Professor in the same department.
