Theme for International Open Access Week (October 23 - 29) 2023:

"Community over Commercialization".

The aim of this theme is to stimulate a candid discussion about the policies and practices that prioritize the public and academic community, and which do not. A UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science, adopted by 193 member states, emphasizes the importance of community over commercialization in its calls for preventing "inequitable extraction of profit from publicly funded scientific activities" as well as supporting "non-commercial publishing models and collaborative publishing models with no article processing charges". By highlighting these areas the original vision of open access (OA)  (First definition "“an old tradition and a new technology have converged to make possible an unprecedented public good.”)  can be achived.
