In the backdrop of an LED TV serving as an e-bulletin board in an academic library, digital signage will have to be decided based on budget, functionality, and scalability. Here is a comparison to help you decide:

Digital Signage
Pros:

Customizability: By comparison, digital signage systems do come with advanced software options that allow content creation and management. You may need to schedule different messages and run multiple displays, all easily done.
Integration: Very often integrates with different sources of information, such as RSS feeds or social media, in order to provide dynamic and live content.
Central Control and Remote Updating: Comparable to digital signage, this is especially necessary where several displays are used across a large campus area.
Interactivity: Some digital signage solutions support touchscreens or other interactive elements to better engage their users.
Scalability: Designed to be scaled, so you will be able to add more displays or upgrade the system whenever needed.
Cons:

One way to determine the answer is by looking at the differences between a dedicated digital signage display versus an LED TV.

* Dedicated Digital Signage Display: Generally more up-front expensive, as it requires specific hardware, software, and installation. It also requires significantly more setup and ongoing management than a simple LED TV.
* LED TV
Pros:

Cost Effective: The up-front cost is less compared to the dedicated digital signage systems.
Easy: It's easier to set up and run for simple requirements—just connect it to a computer or media player to display static content or basic slideshows.
Versatility: A display can still be used for other uses when it is not needed as an e-bulletin board.
Cons:

Limited Feature Set: No advanced content management or scheduling available as one might find in a digital signage system.
Manual Updates: In most cases, content updates require physical presence at the TV or media player.
No Remote Management: Remote updates and Centralized control are not supported, which can be a limitation on dealing with multiple displays.
Considerations for an Academic Library
Content Needs: If you want active, frequently refreshed content that allows for some level of interactivity, digital signage may be the better choice. Budget: In case of a very tight budget and the need for only a very basic solution, an LED TV would suffice. Future Growth: In cases of future growth or adding more displays, digital signage can be stretched out much more flexibly and easily.
Technical Support: Think about whether you have the technical knowledge to run a digital signage system or if you just want the simplicity of an LED TV.
