Book Title: Democracy in India

Evolution, Challenges, and Reforms (Before and After 2014)

 By: KHRITISH SWARGIARY

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Preface

India’s journey as the world’s largest democracy has been a story of resilience, transformation, and relentless evolution. Since gaining independence in 1947, the nation has embraced democracy as both a political system and a cultural ethos. This book, Democracy in India: Evolution, Challenges, and Reforms (Before and After 2014), seeks to explore the significant milestones and critical turning points in Indian democracy, with a special focus on the years following 2014, a period marked by the emergence of strong leadership, shifts in federal structures, and evolving narratives on citizen participation and civil liberties.

The objective of this work is to present an unbiased and evidence-based examination of democracy in India, while offering my personal reflections grounded in research and critical analysis. Unlike many works that lean heavily on ideological biases, this book attempts to balance commendations for progress with constructive criticism where needed. The intent is to foster a deeper understanding of how democratic principles have shaped governance, political behavior, and public life, and how they have been tested by new socio-political challenges.

The book is divided into four sections. The first section lays the historical foundation, tracing India’s democratic evolution from the drafting of its Constitution to the major political shifts of the late 20th century. The second section provides an analytical overview of post-2014 India, examining key reforms, majoritarian politics, and the reconfiguration of federalism. The third section critically evaluates India’s democratic health by discussing civil liberties, judicial independence, and media freedom. Finally, the fourth section offers insights into the future trajectory of Indian democracy and proposes actionable recommendations for strengthening democratic governance.

In writing this book, I have drawn extensively from parliamentary records, electoral data, media analyses, and scholarly research. The text seeks to be accessible to a broad audience, including students, researchers, policymakers, and anyone interested in understanding the nuances of Indian democracy.

I am deeply aware of the complexity and sensitivity of this subject. My personal opinions are informed by research and reflection but are presented with a conscious effort to remain balanced and fair. I believe that democracy thrives on diverse perspectives and constructive dialogue, and it is my hope that this book contributes meaningfully to ongoing discussions about India’s democratic journey.
