I think Associate Librarian is equivalent to Deputy Librarian. 5 year experience as asst. Librarian or college librarian is compulsory to become deputy Librarian.

Associate Librarian???????

Associate Librarian designation is available through promotion.

1. First you will be appointed as college Librarian or University Assistant Librarian on the scale 15600-39100 (AGP 6000/-)

2. after 6 yr service (4yr. in case of Phd on appointment) in the scale 15600-39100 (AGP 6000/-) you will get senior scale  15600-39100 (AGP 7000/-)

3. after 5 yr service in the scale 15600-39100 (AGP 7000/-) you will get selection  scale  15600-39100 (AGP 8000/-)

4.after 3 yr service  in the scale 15600-39100 (AGP 8000/-) you will get associate scale  37400-67000 (AGP 9000/-).

there is no direct recruitment on associate librarian scale as per UGC norms

thank you sir

very useful information provided by you.

As replied by other senior professional friends, there is no such title/post exists in libraries. Neither UGC has prescribed it. It may be observed in any non-govt. firm or it also might be manipulated by some unofficial sources. Ma'am if you could tell the sources where you found this term. We may also update our information.

Thanking you...

Dear Ms. N.D. Lilly Paulin,

Thank for your post and dropping a rather uncommon issue for discussion.

As I understand "Associate Librarian" is not an established designation in our mainstream academic systems like UGC, AICTE MCI etc. etc. However Private Institutions can very well designate their staff in such seemingly unused category. However, I must admit that I shall not be surprised if Govt. funded societies designate their staff in this way. In fact, in University system (UGC) there is no official designation  as CHIEF LIBRARIAN, but I know an University who designate its University Librarian (with GP 10, 000/-) as Chief Librarian and the Deputy Librarians are called LIBRARIAN. So  for your case, such things may  also happen for UGC approved Govt. funded organizations as well. In this sense, the Pay scale of Associate Librarian should be LESSER than that of LIBRARIAN. If the Librarian post has GP, 10,000, Associate Librarian may get GP 9000 or 8000. For Non UGC institutions, if the Librarian gets 10, 000/- the Associate Librarian may get 8900/- or 8700/- or even 7600/- according to the discretion of the authority. But certainly the pay scale should be higher than that of a Deputy Librarian

Sincerely,

Siddhartha S. Ray, Calcutta

In ICAR (Agricultural University) Associate Librarian designation is available

Thank you so much for all those for spending your precious time in replying to such a crucial question esp Siddhartha sir, jagjit sir, prem sir, munesh sir, amit sir, sethi. since i am working in a private institution as an assistant librarian, some of the things are not clear. Even after I cleared my UGC-net my designation is not changed as associate librarian. what is the difference betn the qualification of an assistant librarian and associate librarian. is the qualification of finishing only MLISc is enough for Assistant Librarian? becoz before finishing my ugcnet my post is changed as assistant librarian.

Thank you so much for all those who spend your precious time in replying to such a crucial question. esp siddhartha sir, jagjit sir, prem sir, muneesh sir, amit sir, sethi sir. Since I am working in a private institution as an assistant librarian, some of the things are not clear. what is the difference between an assistant librarian and associate librarian qualification. is only finishing masters in lib.science is enough for assistant librarian.or clearing in ugc-net is applicable for associate librarian?

Dear Ms. N.D. Lilly Paulin,

Thanks for your response. According to UGC rules NET is essential for the post of Assistant University Librarian or College Librarian.

Since there is no designation of Library Staff under UGC system as Associate Librarian, there is no provision (or question) for fixing qualification and other criteria for this designation. Since you are working in a private organization, Please first ensure whether they have any promotional  or service rule at all. If there is nothing, then everythingl depends upon the discretion of  your authority. However, if you are getting (as Assistant Librarian) the pay scale of Assistant University Librarian, then by this norms  pay scale of Associate Librarian should be more than that of a Deputy University Librarian (like Rs. 8000/- or 9000/-GP ) but less than that of Librarian in University (GP 10,000/-) However, as my estimation goes, if the above pay structure exists in  your organization, then there is high possibility to give you GP 8000 in the Pay Scale of Rs. 15,600-Rs.39,100. to get GP RP 9000/- (where the pay scale will be Rs. 37400-67,000/-  and at the minimum the Basic pay will be Rs. 46,100/- ) seems to be difficult. However, it is exclusively my personal view.

Sincerely,

Siddhartha Shankar Ray, Calcutta

Thank you so much Siddhartha sir for your immediate reply

madam you have got right information now UGC introduced latest 3rd amendment and tough the procedure to get the promotion.
